Abstract
The aim of this paper was to evaluate educational role of the on-line cardiology portal http://kardioserwis.com, focused on patient-doctor interaction. Method: type of most frequently asked questions and educational possibilities were analysed. According to the terms and conditions of our portal we did not diagnose or formulate therapeutic recommendations. Results: during 9 months a 1003 questions were asked by internauts (mostly young adults – 60,6% were<35 years of age) and were answered by physicians. Type of questions concerning circulatory system: disturbing symptoms - 30,5%, therapeutic methods 25,1%, therapeutic recommendation request - 22,8%, explanation of diagnosis - 14,6%, prognosis – 17,5%, medications – 7,7%, prophylaxis and life-style – 6,8%, diagnostics – 6,6%, pregnancy and heart disease – 0,9%, alternative medicine – 0,7%. Subject matter of questions: chest pain and discomfort – 15%, arrhythmias and conduction disturbances – 13,9%, congenital and acquired heart defects – 13%, coronary artery disease – 12,3%, ECG description – 5%, cardiosurgery procedures – 5%, hypertension – 4,1%, lipids and diet – 4,1%, myocarditis – 1,8%, hypotension – 1,1%, pacemakers – 1,1%. Conclusions: 1. Most users of our on-line portal are young people, and this offers an opportunity to provide them health promoting information. 2. One third of questions arose from inappropriate or lack of information provided by doctors, and on-line resources could be a good supplement of it. 3. Haemodynamically and clinically unimportant diagnosis without proper explanations often causes a strong psychological trauma. 4. Big number (>30%) of the questions concerning disturbing symptoms gives an opportunity to convince the patients of the necessity seeing their family doctor sooner, than they would do themselves. In summary we conclude that on-line medical portals are an important educational tool that should be more widely used.
